Heart failure is not an option!
Prevention of relapse and rehabilitation of heart failure is Key. At this moment, over 250,000 patients suffer from heart failure. Hospital admissions already exceed 30.000 patients per year, with average yearly costs of €25,000 per patient. An estimation for 2050 shows that 1 in 6 aged >65 will suffer from heart failure. Patients with heart failure experience daily physical and emotional distress. Everyday tasks can feel like a heavy sports exercise and may limit a patient’s ability to leave the house.
How can we tackle this problem?
Current care is not designed to meet the needs of people with heart failure. The main question of a patient is: “How do I get through the day?’’. Today’s solutions mainly focus on medication and devices to prolong patients’ lives, while quality of life should be the objective.
The solution
We need a radical change of care.
- Monitor and treat heart failure at home: improve quality of care and reduce the burden for patients and the healthcare workforce.
- Lifestyle and rehabilitation: get patients in an optimal physical and mental state.
- Collaboration: clinicians, researchers and MedTech companies need to work together
